Daniel Yakubovich (Russian: Даниил Якубович) works in Berlin at the intersection of painting, essay writing and architectural thought. His work brings image and space, sacredness and memory into dialogue with the cultural interconnections between Germany and Eastern Europe.
He studied architecture at Berlin University of the Arts, with periods of study in Vienna. For his graduation project, he developed an alternative proposal for the reconstruction of the Fraenkelufer Synagogue; the project was accompanied by publications and radio interviews. He works on public building projects, with a focus on cultural buildings.
His artistic practice moves between historical visual languages and contemporary experience. Egypt and Byzantium, Orthodox and Soviet imagery, city and landscape, the body and family memory form recurring points of reference. Painting, drawing and photography serve less as illustration than as distinct ways of making history, origins and sacredness visible. His engagement with Friedrich Schröder-Sonnenstern and Art Brut led to a 2024 exhibition of a Berlin private collection at the Mönchehaus Museum Goslar, at the intersection of art, biography and the history of psychiatry.
Yakubovich writes on architectural culture and architecture, art and the politics of memory, and the cultural and political order of the present. His work has appeared in JUNGE FREIHEIT, CATO, Novo Argumente, Achse des Guten and other media. Pensarium brings these fields together in an archive of his writing, art and projects.
